If your premises have the available space, it's well worth considering a combined **Class 4 & 7 MOT bay**—even if you originally planned to install a Class 4 bay only.
The additional investment is relatively small compared with a standard Class 4 installation, yet it opens the door to testing a much wider range of vehicles. Class 7 MOTs also command the maximum permitted test fee, while Class 4-only stations may need to reduce their pricing in competitive local markets to attract customers.
The key consideration when planning a Class 4 & 7 bay is ensuring your building meets the required dimensions, particularly ceiling height and access.
As a guide:
- A minimum headroom of 5.0m is typically required where the lift is installed on the existing workshop floor.
- 4.8m headroom is sufficient where the lift is recessed into the floor.
- Building entrances should provide a clear opening of 3.0m wide × 3.2m high where the bay is fully contained within a building over 14m long.
- Where the MOT bay extends through the workshop entrance, a 3.5m-wide opening is needed.
- For pit-based installations, a minimum clear headroom of 3.2m is required throughout the testing area.
